API 5CT covers technical delivery requirements for casing, tubing, pup joints, coupling stock, coupling material, and accessory material. Grade is only one part of selection; well design, loads, environment, dimensions, connection, end finish, inspection, and the specified edition must be confirmed together.

Engineering and purchasing summary

Grade is only one part of an OCTG order

Select casing or tubing from the approved well design, then state the complete API 5CT grade and type, dimensions, nominal mass or wall, range, connection, end finish, inspection, marking, and protection. Higher strength alone does not determine suitability for the well environment.

Common API 5CT grade families in early purchasing review

GradePurchasing contextDo not overlook
J55Common casing and tubing grade where approved by the well designProduct type, size, mass or wall, range, and connection
K55Commonly encountered casing grade with its own API 5CT requirementsDo not treat the similar strength class as identical to J55
N80Higher-strength casing or tubing selection with type-specific requirementsState the complete grade/type and required heat-treatment basis
L80Grade family often reviewed for hardness and environmental requirementsSour or corrosive service needs the project material specification
P110Higher-strength grade for approved casing or tubing designsEvaluate loads, environment, connection performance, and inspection together

Separate casing duty from tubing duty

Casing supports and isolates the wellbore, while tubing provides the production or injection flow path. Their load cases, sizes, weights, connections, and operating environments differ. Begin with the well program and engineering design rather than selecting from a grade list.

J55 and K55 require complete product context

J55 and K55 are common API 5CT grades, but grade alone does not define casing or tubing performance. State product type, size, nominal mass or wall, range length, manufacturing route where required, connection, coupling, and end finish.

Casing and tubing orders must identify dimensions, range, connection, coupling, and end finish in addition to grade.

N80 and L80 are not interchangeable labels

N80 and L80 include requirements and type distinctions that must follow the specified edition. L80 selections are often associated with additional hardness and environmental considerations, but suitability for corrosive or sour conditions requires the project material specification and qualified engineering review.

P110 serves higher-strength design requirements

P110 is selected where the approved well design requires its strength class. Higher strength does not automatically mean better suitability for every environment or connection. Collapse, burst, tension, connection performance, toughness, hardness, and service exposure must be evaluated as a system.

P110 selection should follow the approved well design and complete connection and inspection requirements.

Write the OCTG purchase order around the well design

Include API 5CT edition, casing or tubing, full grade and type, outside diameter, nominal mass or wall thickness, range, quantity, seamless or welded requirement where applicable, end finish, thread and coupling, drift, NDT, hydrotest, marking, certificates, thread protectors, and packing.

Procurement checklist

  • State API 5CT edition and casing or tubing duty
  • Use the complete grade and type designation
  • Define OD, nominal mass or wall, range, and quantity
  • Specify seamless or welded route where required
  • Identify connection, thread, coupling, end finish, and drift
  • List NDT, hydrotest, marking, certificates, protectors, and packing
