API 5L defines line pipe for pipeline transportation systems, but writing only API 5L and a grade does not complete an order. The purchaser must identify the required product specification level, pipe type, dimensions, delivery condition, tests, and applicable annexes.

PSL is part of the purchase basis
PSL1 and PSL2 are product specification levels within API 5L. PSL2 adds or tightens technical controls in areas such as chemical composition, mechanical properties, traceability, testing, and acceptance, with the exact requirements depending on grade, manufacturing route, dimensions, delivery condition, and the edition invoked by the order.
Grade designations must be complete
API 5L grades may be expressed using letter grades and/or strength-based designations. The RFQ should reproduce the full designation required by the design documents, including PSL and delivery-condition suffix where applicable. Similar-looking grade names should not be treated as interchangeable without engineering approval.
Pipe type and manufacturing route still matter
Seamless, HFW/ERW, LSAW, and SSAW routes can be supplied where permitted by the specification and project. Each route has its own dimensional range, seam configuration, process controls, and inspection considerations. State every permitted route instead of asking the supplier to infer it from size or grade.
Testing follows the ordered basis
Hydrostatic testing, nondestructive examination, tensile testing, impact testing where required, dimensional inspection, and visual acceptance must follow the ordered PSL, grade, annexes, and project additions. Any more stringent client test should be listed before quotation.
Build a complete API 5L purchase order
State quantity, PSL, pipe type, specification and edition, full grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, length type, end preparation, coating, marking, inspection documents, applicable annexes, and destination. Clarify whether substitutions require written approval.
